I always wanted to build a blog focused on my professional career, and having to make it for a school appointment gave me the opportunity to make it happen. I am very grateful for the chance of hosting my own domain through school and being able to show myself and my past endeavors.
In this blog post I will guide you through my process of creating this blog.
Hosting of domain
My school provides students with free web hosting and a custom domain. I accessed this service through Academic Software, where I selected the WordPress Business Package.
After receiving the package, I went to the Combell Hosting Environment and setup my domain name making sure the web hosting is linked with WordPress installed.
Installing plugins and selecting theme
After setting up the environment I went ahead and installed some plugins to make my life easier. After doing some research, I chose the following:
- Elementor: Website builder making it easier to create and edit components and blocks.
- Unlimited Elements for Elementor: Adds a large collection of free widgets and templates to use.
- Proxy Cache Purge: Automatically empty cached pages when content on your site is modified.
- Image Optimizer: Automatically resize, optimize, and convert images to WebP and AVIF. Compress images in bulk or on upload to boost your WordPress site performance.
- Complianz: Auto-generate cookies and terms & conditions.
Next I had to choose which theme to use. After experimenting with lots of different themes, Astra was the most user-friendly and optimized. It is lightweight, fast and easy to customize. It offers a clean design that looks professional that is compatible with Elementor.
Components
When creating my professional portfolio website, my main goal was to give visitors a clear sense of who I am, what I’ve done, and what I’m currently working on. I also wanted to include my CV on the site so that anyone interested in it would also get a broader picture of me as a person and professional.
That’s why my website includes the following components:
Home: A brief introduction to my personality, followed by links to my social profiles.
About Me: A page that outlines my journey so far and offers insight into my working style and professional mindset.
Blog: A space where I share past experiences, projects, and thoughts I believe are worth sharing.
CV: A dedicated page for my Curriculum Vitae, which I expect will often serve as an entry point to the site for potential employers or collaborators.
This structure allows visitors to not only view my professional background but also understand the person behind the work.
